Bite Force in Fixed Vs. Removable Prosthetics

Important new research using Innobyte™ has been featured in the most recent Journal of Prosthodontics.



In "Investigating the maximum bite force and speech intelligibility in patients requiring prosthetic rehabilitation,"[1] study authors found that maximum bite force and speech intelligibility both decline sharply as treatment moves from fixed implant-supported prostheses toward removable denture designs.


The study found that implant-supported fixed dental prostheses provide 7.25 times the bite force of complete removable dentures


Practitioners can use this information to project bite force with implants by measuring the patient's bite force before surgery. 


For example: 

A patient with complete removable dental prosthesis (CRDP) whose bite force is measured at 100 N pre-treatment can be estimated to have a resultant bite force of approximately 725 N after treatment with implant-supported fixed dental prosthesis (IFDP)


This critical information can help inform design choices for both provisional and final prosthetics, including the number of implants necessary to ensure optimal bite force load distribution.



The study authors concluded,


"This study underscores the need for individualized assessment strategies in prosthodontic rehabilitation by establishing an objective functional gradient across prosthetic designs...Bite force sensors and intelligibility scorers offer efficient, evidence‐based tools for long‐term evaluation.”
